Pyruvate is a substance that occurs naturally in the human body and in many foods, including red apples (450 mg), dark beer (80 mg per 12oz), red wine (75 mg per 6 ounces), and many cheeses. The normal individual consumes anywhere between 100 mg 10 1-2 grams daily. The body manufactures its own pyruvate by converting carbohydrates into glucose, and then into pyruvate. For every glucose molecule converted, the human body manufactures two molecules of pyruvic acid. Pyruvic acid is then converted into ATP - the process that "fuels" the body's cells.
